Banksia Woodland Restoration Project
The Banksia Woodland Restoration (BWR) Project commenced in 2011 and uses offset funding to restore banksia woodlands on the metropolitan Swan Coastal Plain. Jandakot Airport provides this funding to the Department as part of a Commonwealth requirement under the EPBC Act, to offset the clearing of 167 ha of native vegetation for expansion at Jandakot Airport. Approved in 2009, this offset (EPBC 2009/4796) aims to address loss of habitat for the nationally threatened Carnaby’s cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus latirostris) and grand spider orchid (Caladenia huegelii). The Departmental aim is to protect and conserve banksia woodlands of the Swan Coastal Plain as the primary habitat for these threatened species. In September 2016 the “Banksia Woodlands of the Swan Coastal Plain” ecological community was also listed as an endangered Threatened Ecological Community under the EPBC Act.
