What is a data catalogue?
A data catalogue is an inventory of data assets, organised by metadata, data management principles and search tools, which provides on-demand access to business-ready data. In this way, a data catalogue not only provides an inventory of available data but it also connects datasets with rich information to help you find the data you need and evaluate its fitness for your particular use case.
Why does DBCA need a data catalogue?
DBCA contains multiple large and complex datasets from many sources and disciplines. Finding, accessing and sharing data can be a major challenge. To assist you with these tasks the Biodiversity Information Office and Ecoinformatics have worked together to modernise DBCA’s own Data Catalogue, introducing and updating features.
The enhanced features of the new DBCA Data Catalogue let you:
- Assign a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to permanently identify an article or document and link to it on the web.
- View business metadata and data lineage to improve understanding and trust of departmental data.
- Apply personalised tags, properties and business metadata for greater utilisation of and understanding of data products.
- Browse dataset samples and profile statistics to ensure that data contain the expected information.
- Control how you release data by allowing you to:
- make data publicly discoverable to encourage collaboration and for supplementary data publication,
- share data with targeted DBCA groups or the entire department, or to
- embargo data release until the purpose for which the data was collected is complete.
The DBCA Data Catalogue is designed to become a comprehensive repository of collated data, documents and other data products within the department.
Data Catalogue puts all your data into one simplified view where authorised users can easily find, understand and use departmental data.
Data published through Data Catalogue are provided freely in accordance with FAIR and CARE principles.
Key benefits of the DBCA Data Catalogue
- Maximise the reuse of data when their original purpose is complete.
- Securely archive data when they are no longer required.
- Get data insights faster with on-demand access to compiled datasets.
- Trust your data by understanding its lineage — a detailed history showing the original source and journey of the data.
- Make data available to diverse users quickly and without compromising data security.
- Streamline analytics-ready information with automated profiling and metadata tools.
- Collaborate on data analyses with colleagues in other DBCA business areas or external organisations.
